My two favorite things about Genesis are the friendly staff and the pool. Being able to reserve a swim lane is like getting your favorite spot every time you go fishing. It made lap swimming fun again for me. The staff are very nice and non-judgemental.
I’ve put off leaving this review for a couple of years now. But I finally caved after speaking with another individual about it. I was a pretty active member for about a year during 2022. I attended the water fit classes MWF in the evenings, starting in April or May, until late in the year after we were moved back inside. For the most part, the classes were great. But the other members weren’t. In the summer, during two separate water fit classes, the same group of teenagers made it their mission to hang out around the pool, point, make fun of, and take pictures of the water fit class. They were quiet nights, so I’m not sure the dates exactly. But comments like “whale and piggies” were overheard while making snide remarks. This was reported to the class instructor, who told me “boys will be boys” and shrugged it off. For an environment that is supposed to be welcoming, judgment free, and encouraging to those wanting to make changes to their life, it felt like the exact opposite. Nothing was done until I went and spoke with a manager. Who took care of the kids, and kicked them out. However, that wasn’t the only incident. About a month later, in the very same class, another individual wasn’t watching where he was going during one of the exercises in the pool. He ran right into me. But instead of apologizing, saying excuse me, or literally anything else that could’ve been acceptable. He instead told me to “watch where you’re going fatass”. I had been coming regularly. I was 20 pounds down. Per doctor instructions I could only do pool exercises due to herniated discs in my back. I was honestly gutted. Being called names by someone else in the class, twice my age, hurt more than that group of teenagers. This was a 50 year old man. I was 24. I told the instructor, and this time she says “well what do you expect me to do about it? It’s just how he is”. So I saved my energy and I haven’t been back. I can’t go back to a gym that allows behavior like this. Even if it’s not the gym itself, the instructor allowed it. And that’s not okay. I wasn’t expecting her to stop the class, kick him out, or make a scene. I wanted her to just… tell me she would talk to him later. Take some sort of steps to make sure something like that didn’t happen again. I have never been harassed the way I was at genesis, or spoken to the way I was at genesis, at any other gym. It hurt. I thought it would be an uplifting place where I would grow a community and change my life for the better. But it was the exact opposite. Unless you’re a gym bro, then save your money. This isn’t the warm welcoming experience you’re looking for.
I came to the gym to workout and forgot my T-shirt. Went to the front desk, for a review they gave me a T-shirt. Previously if I didn’t have all my gear I would have gone home. So seeking out a T-shirt is huge. I’ve been working with Ben for over a year and that’s made a difference for me. I do the work but he makes me a plan based on my goals and time available. He encourages me and challenges me, he knows when to push and when to let up. I’ve more energy on days I’ve trained with him. Functionality is what I’m interested in and Ben is great with that. He makes small corrections in my form which helps me exercise correctly, without hurting myself. He’s also trained some of the other trainers. Overall Genesis is a good place. It’s getting updated now and members continue to focus on their health goals and are positive during the construction. I’ve been other places where people were complainers and that’s not the vibe at Genesis. Members, staff, everyone is positive, friendly and welcoming.
This is a great place to work out for my whole family! My husband has used a personal trainer, my daughters enjoy water aerobics, I enjoy playing basketball with my son. I also like the workout equipment which always seems to be in good condition. Looking forward to seeing the new updates when they are ready!
I’m gonna be very honest, I don’t know how I could leave a great review. Genesis has everything you want in a gym. They have a great steam room and the pool is nice. They have all kinds of equipment. Over the years they have had many water issues. I get a membership here to take my kids swimming each summer. The family accommodations are awful. The showers aren’t that big and there is only one family room attached to each locker room. They also charge a premium for the membership. If you are going to charge a lot, then be better. I love Genesis, I go 3-5 times a week right now. I just have to be honest, right now, this is a 3 star gym. Thanks for cleaning the curtains!
