Healthy Self Fitness is an Aboriginal owned health service in Adelaide offering fitness and wellbeing programs. The Walking on Country program blends exercise with cultural connection, including guided hikes in the Adelaide Hills and yarn circles. My experience of the program was that for my personally it was finally an exercise program that was culturally safe. This helped me feel more comfortable sharing with other First Nations women my journey as an Aboriginal woman and feeling okay to share. I absolutely loved also learning more about hiking in a safe way with other woman and am looking forward to continuing my enjoyment of hiking and gaining more confidence and to share my confidence and knowledge now of hiking trails in Adelaide on Kaurna Yerta. cannot believe how my wellbeing escalated during the first time I attended the program. I have been doing other programs within the community however for a period of time my cultural safety has been challenged and I have found myself within the group being withdrawn and sometimes even reluctant to attend due to me cultural safety. As soon as I met with the team leader and introduced to some of the other First Nations women, I found myself experiencing an overwhelming sense of relief due to feeling safe, a sense of community. Week 2 and I got lost, before joining this deadly group I would have packed up and gone home thinking it's all too hard to keep trying but I didn't I pushed through saying to myself "I need to do this", I eventually found the group and yes, was a bit late but that's okay, I'm okay. I have found myself easily connecting with the other women in the group, the yarns flow easily, and everyone is easy to engage with, I love that and feel comfortable amongst the group. Trisha our team leader is deadly, making everything easy, and checking in with us and when she does this to me makes me feel welcomed, safe and part of the community. I can't wait for week 3. We have a night walk but I've decided not to do this, I am not ready yet need more time to feel more comfortable just hiking. Week 3 and I was confidently able to get to the destination with ease. My wellbeing is looking better each week I participate and meet with the amazing deadly sisters I found. The space enables me to reminisce of being on my own Country and that feeling beneath my shoes, the ground, what I see and focusing on putting one foot in front of the other and loving the unevenness of the path as I make my way behind the others. Taking an opportunity to yarn with different ones that I've recently met, finding connections in our professional worlds as well.
Trish is a deadly instructor and I’m so thankful to her for sharing her knowledge. The Walking on Country program has been an incredible experience, blending fitness and cultural connection. The guided hikes through the Adelaide Hills are not only great for physical health but also offer a safe and welcoming space for First Nations women to connect, share stories and strengthen community ties. The yarning circles are a highlight - so grounding and powerful. Highly recommend to other deadly tiddas looking for a holistic approach to well-being 🍃💪🏽

For women who are intimidated by the standard gym, Trish provides a culturally safe space to focus on your movement and fitness. She customises training to help you manage injuries while still encouraging you to get the most out of your session. Trish is passionate about what she does and it comes out in her approach. Highly recommended.
Trish is amazing at what she does. I had little to no experience exercising and using gym equipment, and after completing the 10-week program, I have gained so much skills and confidence. 10/10 would recommend her as a PT. She will definitely see me again when I need more sessions.
