My daughter is very lucky to have met such a teacher who sincerely cares for their students. The dojo provides an excellent and truly privileged environment for training. it’s perfect!!!
An unbelievable experience, practicing martial arts at Japanese American Budokan. One year ago, I searched for a dojo in NYC to resume my martial arts training - I had not practiced Karate in 30 years. I found this dojo and I am so grateful that I ended up here. Ryu Sensei is a phenomenal, world-class athlete, instructor, and mentor. Classes are very engaging, accessible, and vary from being focused on details of movement to intense cardio and conditioning. The perfect opportunity to push beyond your own limits but also go at the pace that you are most comfortable with. Each session has a unique structure in terms of content, and as you progress you can see and feel the improvements in fundamentals, as you do more than just simple repetition of moves. I can not speak highly enough of the community that this dojo has brought together. One of my hesitations initially was walking in to start training with a group of people I do not know. I was warmly welcomed and have made so many great friends. It is a vibe of encouragement and hard work that we all share in the dojo, especially when training for promotion and tournaments (which are challenging but really fun!) I started out wanting to see if I could still do Karate and make it routine, and one year later not only have I gained the confidence that I can do it and have made it routine, but I feel like I want to do it more and more each week. If you're interested in martial arts, this is the place!
Positive environment! Great place for beginners and children. The vibe in the children's class is friendly, laid back, and fun. All the kids love Ryu sensei, and he is great with children. It's also a great environment for learning (and/or reinforcing) Japanese language. The class is taught in both English and Japanese, so it really is a great cultural/language immersion. Our 5 year old son loves it and his Japanese skills have vastly improved because of these karate lessons.
My son has been practicing Karate here for years now and he loves it. Great for kids who need to vent out stress and stay healthy; it comes with training inner strength for self control and self defense. It's also a great place to experience different kinds of Martial arts. Not only do they have Karate, Judo and Yoga, they do special classes for all kinds of martial arts! My son now does Judo and Karate regularly and surprisingly tried Yoga last week! Led by Ryu-Sensei, all the teachers are professional, friendly and super dedicated. Great mentors for my son.
This is an amazing place to begin your martial arts journey. Sensei Ryu is so incredibly knowledgeable in karate theory, practice, and application. He thinks about every moment, every reaction, like a true martial artist. Furthermore the fact that the Budokan also has Judo is amazing. One can become a truly well rounded martial artist with both karate and judo. The Budokan is really a brilliant idea by a brilliant man. If you want to study traditional martial arts with modern application and training methods this is the perfect place.
