Professor Omar Santiago has been diligently studying martial arts (in particular Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing) for over 25 years. He has traveled to Brazil and Thailand numerous times regular to train with the Masters and brings this high level of experience to our Portland area. He is one of the original BJJ practitioners in the Portland area that has trained under the legend Megaton. He and his team of skilled students are warm inviting and a perfect place to start your Martial Arts Journey or perfect your existing skills. I have been training martial arts for 35 years and still learning everyday.
This BJJ academy in Portland is top-notch! A huge shoutout to Tristan for being so supportive and helpful throughout my onboarding – he made getting started a breeze. Meeting Professor Omar during orientation was a great experience, and my initial classes have me completely sold. I've already learned a ton in both no-gi and gi sessions with Professor Omar and CJ in just a few visits. For anyone on the fence, it's definitely worth the drive for this quality of instruction and welcoming atmosphere.
Best gym i have ever trained at. I'm an experienced wrestler and the bjj classes are some of the most insightful I have ever taken. Plenty of beginner and experienced adults and kids classes for both self defense and competition. Everyone is very kind and supportive of whoever and wherever you are in life. Definitely will be a long time member.
My 6 year old daughter started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Mata Leao one year ago at the age of 5. She loves the physical challenge of the classes and mini sparring sessions. She also enjoys the fun games played in each kids class that also improve her martial arts skills and overall sports agility. As parents we love that Jiu Jitsu is very active so our daughter can get her energy out at the end of the school day. We also like that each class is taught by a high level martial artist with years of experience. The best result for kids is the confidence that Mata Leao martial arts programs build. They have a great focus on de-escalation of conflict wherever the kid may encounter it, on a school playground with a bully or at home with a sibling. Any kid at any age 5 to 18 would benefit from martial arts training at Mata Leao.
Best school in Portland! Do yourself a favor and just go ahead and get yourself a year membership. This school has it all. Fantastic morning and afternoon strength training. Great Muay Thai Kickboxing, outstanding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and children's martial arts. The coaches and professors are kind, funny, caring, and build a true repor with their clients and students. This gym has a family friendly feel too. Very LGBTQA friendly.
