Our favorite steak restaurant in Hampton Roads is Ruth Chris but it's a little farther away from us so my husband took me to River Stone Chophouse for my birthday. So our benchmark starts from Ruth Chris. River Stone was nice but didn't match up to Ruth Chris. The bill was much higher but the quality was lower. First, the filet does Not match up. When our food arrived, the filet was flat and not thick and then my medium was so well done it was hard to cut. Yes. I returned it. My husband ordered the aged rib-eye also medium. He liked it until as he cut closer to the bone, it was too rare so he left that (see pic). My husband finished his rib-eye and I still hadn't received my corrected filet. After about 30 minutes, it arrived better cooked and it did taste good. The mashed potatoes were cool and the green beans were tough so we didn't eat. That was very disappointing (especially since the bill was over $200 and no, we don't drink alcohol so with the two sides and appetizer, we only had sodas). For that amount we'll have no problem heading back to VA Beach Ruth Chris! Additionally, the service was nice but Again, nothing compared to Ruth Chris who upon arriving the last time we went for our anniversary, the maitred surprised us by decorating our tzble as we sat and a sweet desert. We received no such warm consideration at River Stone. The atmosphere was okay. I'm sorry I cannot recommend this restaurant.
The short rib mac and six-cheese was solid and satisfying. The lobster stew came in generous portions—definitely hearty enough to be a main course rather than an appetizer. Brussels sprouts with bacon-onion jam were expertly prepared but just missing that extra spark of wow. The 7 oz sirloin with veggies was tasty overall, though it leaned a bit too salty for my taste. The raw and steamed oysters, however, were outstanding—fresh and perfect. Clearly a local favorite; the place was packed. That said, we were unexpectedly asked to remove our hats while seated—something I’ve literally never encountered in a supposedly “casual” spot. First time for everything, I guess!
Highly recommend their scallop entree special and spiced peach cobbler cheesecake! Scallops were the best either of us had ever had. NY strip steak with garlic green beans was also delicious! Our server, Rachel, was great and welcomed us to the area. We'll definitely be returning.
I want to like this place. I came here twice in a span of 2 days. Both times I came alone. The first time I sat at the bar. I ordered a glass of wine, raw oysters and salmon dish. I ordered salmon medium rare it but it came more on the medium well side. Nevertheless it was very tasty. My oyster order was forgotten and it came after I reminded them, but it was in the middle of my main course. The food was good just the timing was off. I gave it a try again (came alone again). This time I made reservations. It took a couple min to be seated but not bad at all. I ordered house salad, oysters, crab cakes and wine. The water had no ice which is a sign of a good restaurant. I hate ice in my water. The garden salad had appropriate amount of dressing and greens were bite size so I didn't feel like I was a rabbit. I was happy with my salad. What I noticed is that the table was sticky. My phone actually stuck to the table. Maybe it's just finish of the table plus their cleaning stuff: still not good. My wine came 20min after I put in my order, not good again, especially when you dine alone. You need booze STAT. The main course came right after my appetizer. Crab cakes were good, slightly too salty for my taste. A small complain I have is that they were luke warm, I would enjoy more if they were hot. The atmosphere of the restaurant had a good vibe, not loud, lighting was slightly dim but you can see the menu and your food (even without reading glasses). For dessert I had hazelnut gelato. It was very good and enormous amount. To summarize, it's a good restaurant but need more attention to details.
If I could give a higher review, I would! The service was impeccable! Hailey was amazing and attentive and so knowledgeable and helpful seeing it was our first time there. The Charred Greek Salad was insanely good even my 10 year old daughter enjoyed it. Highly recommend their desserts as they have a new pastry chef in house now (thanks for the recommendation Hailey). Steaks and sides were awesome as well. This was a birthday dinner for my son and they made it beyond memorable. Highly recommend this place and ask for Hailey, you won’t be disappointed!
