When my father-in-law passed away in 2022, I inherited a very rare Planar SR2060 receiver and a CEC BA-600 turntable that needed some TLC. I looked around and found Sound Service Electronics that seems very reputable and capable of restoring my equipment. So I contacted James and arranged to have him work on it. He said it would take a few months and I thought everything was good. That was 2 years ago. Despite multiple promises to complete the work and return the equipment to me, I still don't have it. James does not answer phone or email anymore. At this point I have to assume my equipment is gone and I won't see it again. It is sad because the equipment was a reminder for my kids of their grandpa. My advice: DON'T LEAVE YOUR EQUIPMENT WITH JAMES. He might do good work. (I don't know because I've never got mine back.) However, you may never see your equipment again.
James and Trevor operate a specialized shop that focuses on "musical electronic equipment." If you have unique, valuable, rare, or vintage electronic equipment, used to produce or record music, what these skilled gentlemen do will be of interest to you.
I am still in awe at the professionalism, work ethic, and knowledge of James. I brought him my amp to get serviced last week and James took the time to explain what was happening and how he was going to fix it. He kept me in the loop the entire time. I picked up my amp two days ago and am very impressed with the sound it produces. Not only that, Ryan has already followed up to see how everything is going. These guys now have a customer for life and I will gladly refer anyone to them. Great job!
I have brought several items to Sound Service for repair and retubing. Everytime I was met with professional and honest advice. Time was never a factor for my items, but if my gear was needed, I'm sure James & Ryan would get my stuff done when needed.I will continue to take all my gear to Sound Service, because TONE is everything, and these guys know TONE. Long Live The Tube!!
I am not sure what the guy who wrote the review with 1 star was smoking when he wrote the review, but it's more likely it's bogus. James and Ryan are top notch guys... always helpful and always have solutions to the artistic (sometimes esoteric) technical questions and problems that modern technical musicians have regarding vintage gear. James did a complete restore of my beloved '66 Fender Bandmaster head -and the results are exquisite. This is probably one of the finest sounding amps I've ever had - I've owned and played many- and it's clean and beautiful. Many people have a hard time believing it's a '66- but it is- and he provided detailed notes of the exact work he performed - to the letter- in a bill of service. It doesn't end there either, I contact the shop often, and they always take the time to answer my small questions and make arrangements for small repairs to the best of their ability and what their schedule allows. There's a very small contingent of technical folks who are competent AND understand the strange and wonderful ways that artists, musicians and producers think- and James and Ryan get it ...and they take the time to get it right... like bench testing a vintage amp for hours so it doesn't quack on you in the middle of a session or gig... it's important to take the time- and they do. You can have (maybe) 2/3 of the options in good, cheap and fast... if you want it cheap and fast look elsewhere... but if you want it good, done right and at a reasonable rate, James and Ryan and Sound Service is one of the few places I could find in this area that can provide this type of electronic technical service expertise.
