My daughter was kicked out mid-lesson! – Unprofessional Music Tuition Liverpool Experience Edit: The Music Development is deflecting the issues and making untrue accusations of aggression and lies. This is a money-grabbing and unethical business - Read on and avoid to save yourself the headache! My 11-year-old daughter has been having piano lessons in Liverpool at The Music Development Liverpool for over six years, and I also took music lessons there for two years. She started off loving it and even achieved Grade 4 piano, but unfortunately, the music tuition quality has declined massively over the past few years. Here are the main issues we’ve experienced with Alex, the owner and tutor: Lesson times cut short: We pay for one-hour music lessons, but they often start late and finish early, meaning my daughter regularly receives only around 50 minutes or less of actual music tuition. Lack of focus during lessons: Alex often eats, takes calls, or works on his laptop instead of fully focusing on teaching. For someone running a music school in Liverpool, this lack of professionalism is disappointing. Poor equipment: My daughter has been learning on an out-of-tune and broken piano for a long time. For a school offering piano lessons Liverpool, you’d expect better-quality instruments and a proper learning environment. Lesson hours not managed properly: At one point, we were owed over 20 hours of lessons, which we had to chase and calculate ourselves. Overcharged for books: We were charged more than double the online price for a piano book (£16 instead of £7). Delayed music grade progress: Despite planning for her to take her next music grade exam in 2025, Alex delayed her progression without a clear reason. When I tried to discuss these issues directly with Alex, he became defensive and actually ended my daughter’s lesson early — effectively kicking her out mid-lesson. This was shocking and extremely unprofessional, especially for someone providing music tuition in Liverpool. If you’re looking for piano lessons, vocal lessons, or instrument tuition in Liverpool, I would advise you to proceed with caution. Do not let your child take lessons with Alex who likes to hide in the back rooms, so you cannot see all of the above. If you do have Alex, ask your child after every lesson exactly how it went. I would recommend John or any of the other Music tutors, I have personally had lessons with John who is highly professional. There are other music schools in Liverpool that offer reliable one-to-one music tuition, proper communication, and genuine support for young musicians.

My daughter has been learning piano at TMD for 18 months. Alex goes above and beyond and gave us help with the musical tests for secondary schools, which helped my daughter gain a place at her preferred school. Her weekly lessons are with Daniel. He is kind and patient and makes the lessons interesting. I would highly recommend TMD.

Great tuning service and very happy with my experience. Alex is friendly and knowledgeable, the appointment was scheduled quickly and he arrived on time. The piano sounded great after tuning except for one note, and when I got in touch Alex agreed to come back and have a look. He gave me advice about the note, which may have been damaged when the piano was moved, and offered to come back in a couple of weeks if it hasn't settled.

My son has been going to The Music Development institute since 2023 and I couldn't be happier. He was only 3 when he started and was encouraged and the plan was made around him. What sets this place apart is the freedom and flexibility we have been provided. The teachers work around the expectations of the parents and needs and potentials of the child. The focus is more on what you want rather than what looks good for advertising and that sets this place apart. There is encouragement instead of competition based on keeping up appearances, there is discipline instead and firmness where needed and most important of all there is freedom of expression and choice by exposure to different instruments while staying focused on one if that's what you wish or need. My son has been able to try different instruments including but not limited to the guitar, violin, drums, flute, recorder and tabla while staying focused on the piano. What more could I ask for!
