USKA taught all students at Rowan Elementary school on 2 separate occasions. Apart from learning the principles of respect, focus and attention, students learned basic techniques as well as self discipline while having fun.! A huge thank you from the entire Rowan team!!
I took my two sons and my daughter to try out United States Karate Academy in San Diego, hoping to find a positive, confidence-building martial arts environment. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing and upsetting. During one of the very first classes, the instructor leading the kids (a large man with a strong accent) ran the class in a way that felt overly harsh, intense, and completely inappropriate for young children. Within minutes, my daughter was overwhelmed, hyperventilating, and crying. What really shocked me was that she wasn’t alone—several other children were also in tears. Instead of encouragement or support, the atmosphere felt intimidating, harsh, and almost military, which is not what parents expect when signing their children up for an martial arts class. I believe that discipline is a big part of martial arts, and that it can be positive. But what we witnessed was not constructive discipline—it was pushing kids so hard, physically and emotionally, that they shut down. As a parent, watching my daughter break down in tears was heartbreaking, and it made it impossible to feel comfortable continuing with the class. What made the situation even more concerning was the lack of presence from the head instructor. He stayed in his office the majority of the time and only came out briefly, which gave the impression that he wasn’t really overseeing what was happening in his school. If a child is crying or struggling, an instructor or leader should be present to step in, correct the tone of the class, or at the very least check in with parents. That never happened. I walked in expecting professionalism, positive leadership, and a structured but encouraging environment. Instead, we left shaken and disappointed. While I’m sure other families may have different experiences, for us, this studio did not feel like a safe or supportive place for children to learn. We decided immediately not to return and are now in the process of finding another school that treats kids with respect, patience, and age-appropriate leadership. Thank You
The instructors from United States Karate Academy that came to our elementary school were very knowledgeable and worked very well with the students. Along with teaching the students the physical kicks and punches, they emphasized life lessons like being safe, paying attention, having fun and showing respect. Also I really liked their emphasis on Karate being about self defense and not about fighting. We will definitely invite USKA to come back to our elementary school.
My son is thriving at US Karate Academy! All of the instructors genuinely care about the kids, and it shows in the way they teach, encourage, and support them. They’ve been incredibly accommodating with my schedule, which I truly appreciate. I love and enjoy the activities we do together as a family,, too! From Padres games to hikes—this keeps the kids and parents enaged , active, and close. I’m looking forward to the months and years ahead watching my son grow here. USKA is not just a place to learn - it’s a place that feels like a community. That’s special!
Four months into his karate journey, and my son Adrian is really enjoying it. He’s become more mindful about making healthy choices with his meals and snacks. We’ve also seen a noticeable improvement in his focus at school, and he’s even started helping out more with chores at home. It’s truly been a positive and rewarding experience for us. His behavior has improved significantly, and I’m so glad we decided to give this a try!
