Absolute MMA Collingwood is an outstanding gym. The coaching is genuinely world-class, with elite athletes training alongside hobbyists like myself, which creates an incredibly supportive and motivating atmosphere. The professionalism is top-tier, but it’s perfectly balanced with humour, positive vibes, and a real sense of community. Whether you’re just curious about MMA, BJJ, or Muay Thai, or you’re a serious athlete already in the game (or trying to get there), this is an amazing place to train. I couldn’t recommend it more.
Absolutely outstanding experience at Absolute MMA - from a member since 2020. From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed into a professional, inclusive, and genuinely supportive environment. Simon (the owner) sets the tone perfectly — always going above and beyond to make sure everyone feels comfortable and valued (even while training UFC level fighters). The whole team reflects that same level of care and professionalism. The trainers are incredibly skilled and knowledgeable across all disciplines, but what really stands out is their ability to tailor their coaching to all levels — from complete beginners to experienced fighters. You can tell they genuinely want everyone to succeed, improve, and enjoy the process. I trained predominantly Muay Thai over the time I trained there, and I always love the variety and enthusiasm trainers would offer you. Couldn’t recommend Absolute MMA more highly for anyone looking for expert training, a welcoming community, and a culture built on respect and professionalism. Honestly the dopest gym I've been a pleasure of being a part of.
My time at Absolute MMA, while short-lived, was very meaningful and enjoyable. The coaches clearly put in effort, and the people who attend classes are invested and create a great atmosphere for learning and training. The equipment, facilities, and overall space in the gym are excellent
Great place to learn Muay Thai, Boxing, MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling. Has a MMA cage, boxing ring, downstairs area for striking and a dedicated upstairs matted area for grappling with weights area downstairs and a cardio area upstairs. Coaches are current active fighters, champions or former fighters, learning proper techniques and knowledge from them. Staff and other gym members are always so welcoming and kind. The gym culture here is quite strong, the camaraderie for those who are fighting or competing is strong and everyone supports each other. Best place to get started on a martial arts journey.
This review encompasses all 3 Melbourne locations for Absolute MMA. I’ve been training at this gym fairly consistently since 2015. I’ve built out most of my close friendship circle within the walls of these locations, and that includes members, reception staff, coaches, and people who used to be staff but still associate themselves with the gym because it’s a great place to be. You do not need to know how to box/kickbox/grapple/fight to start your training journey here. This gym is inclusive and welcoming to people of all skill sets and backgrounds. If you want to show up 1 day per week and do a basic intro class, it’s for you. On the flip side if you want to show up 6 days per week for multiple sessions per day and work your way up to fighting on the global MMA scene, it’s also for you. Absolute MMA Collingwood has arguably the best MMA fight team in Australia, and you’re 1 degree of separation away from training with the best. St Kilda has a world class Jiu Jitsu Pro team, training under the guidance of Lachlan Giles and the other fantastic coaches who are mostly black belts under him. If you’re travelling Aus and want to experience some of the best grappling rounds you’ll experience in the Southern Hemisphere, drop into a Saturday morning open mat session at St Kilda. Also open to beginners. There’s a reason the top guys/girls from around the globe stop off and train here when they’re in town. St Kilda also has a very high percentage of female athletes and students (more than any other fight gym I’ve visited), and if you’re female and feel uncomfortable about training with men, then you don’t have to, although everybody places an emphasis on looking after each other, but personal preferences 🤷♂️. This review is long overdue to be honest. I’ve competed in MMA and Jiu Jitsu competitions with Absolute, and I mostly just train Jiu Jitsu now. Simon the head MMA coach is a legend, he does loads to help people out as if they’re his family and most of it you wouldn’t ever actually hear about because he’s too humble to mention it. He’s helped me out personally in the past. Dan is more behind the scenes these days but he’s also a great guy, keeps everything running smoothly. Kemaal and Ollie are the head Jiu Jitsu coaches at the CBD and Collingwood respectively, they’ve got a wealth of knowledge each and both compete and a high level. There are too many combined attributes to mention in one review, but it’s fantastic and you should try it out. One last thing to mention, is that there’s a weird unspoken (or sometimes spoken) non cross-training rule in some combat sports gyms. There’s none of that here. They take a really practical and scientific approach to the sports that they teach, and encourage the mixing of communities within the sports. Member safety has a high level of focus placed upon it. All of the skills, none of the political bullshit. Good work team ❤️. 🥊
