Absolutely couldn’t recommend Coach Josh more. I started boxing with him two years ago and the community he’s built quickly became a huge part of my life. Josh is a patient, encouraging, and dedicated coach, and will push you to show up for yourself when it’s the last thing you want to do. He’s one of the few coaches I’ve had in any sport that leads by example - putting in the miles, the bag work, the rounds - to show you what it means to be consistent and what it takes to improve. I came into the gym with zero boxing experience and no intention of ever getting in the ring, and I have come so much farther than I ever thought I could. Within six months, I was sparring, running regularly, working out at the track, and generally just wouldn’t shut up about this awesome gym I found, this kick ass coach, and all the cool people his program brought into my life. I take private lessons and train with the masters group (35+) once a week, and I genuinely don’t think you can find a more welcoming, supportive, and inspiring training environment, whether you want to compete or just learn for fun. Josh is an excellent coach, and I was lucky to work with him for several years before I moved. He’s incredibly versatile—whether training professional boxers, teaching beginners the fundamentals, or designing challenging and fun boxing workouts to improve overall fitness, Josh meets people exactly where they are and helps them grow. He’s highly professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely an all-around great guy. Portland is truly lucky to have him. I have such fond memories of training with Josh; he came into my life at a time when I really needed it, and I hope to have the chance to train with him again someday.
When I started taking 1:1 lessons with Coach Josh, I barely had any basic boxing skills. My punches were weak because I was relying on my arm strength and not using my foundation (legs and abs). And my foot work was non existent. I was stumbling all over the ring and the gym. On top of that, my confidence in the sport was incredibaly low. After a few months of lessons, Coach Josh had me throwing solid punches (that landed with power and intention), and he improved my footwork ability and understanding. I was dancing around and across that ring with ease and confidence. I fell in love with boxing all over again! I’m grateful that Coach Josh took me as one of his students! He was deeply patient and dedicated to help me continue learning and have fun in the sport of boxing. I highly recommend 1:1 lessons with Coach Josh. He is an amazing mentor!
2 years ago I tried boxing for the first time in my late 40s. I was extremely anxious to try, but have found that I love it! I’ve taken group classes, workshops as well as one on one coaching from Josh and I can’t recommend him more. He’s extremely knowledgeable, but also patient. But patience doesn’t mean you won’t work! He meets you at your level and helps you get better no matter if your goal is to learn for fun and fitness or to eventually spar or fight professionally.
Coach Josh took 75lbs off of me with hard work, determination, and discipline. It’s not only the skills of getting your hands right for a fight with Coach Josh. He’s systematically making you into a better version of your self. I’ve been working with Coach Josh for years and he took me from “training” in the sport of boxing to a fighter.
