Been going here for a couple years and probably one of the best climbing gyms in the city IMO. Not 5 stars for a couple reasons. Memberships are expensive at around $100 dollars a month. Secondly the locker rooms/showers/sauna could be a lot cleaner and also kept stocked with fresh towels more reliably. Otherwise highly recommend
I’ve been climbing for 3+ years at various gyms, both indoor and outdoor. Movement initially seemed promising, and I’ve been coming here for a while, but today’s (Wednesday evening) experience was bad enough to make me rethink getting a membership. A front desk employee abruptly approached my partner(movement member) and me and demanded, in an unnecessarily rude tone, that I retake a belay test because my belay card was from Brooklyn Boulders. She added that they “didn’t teach me properly,” which was unprofessional and uncalled for. Although I respected the possibility of a gym policy and agreed to retake the test, she refused to let my partner finish his climb. Despite my repeated attempts to communicate that he was near the top and couldn’t hear me, she insisted I bring him down immediately. Forcing a sudden belay without warning feels unsafe and shows poor judgment—this could have easily caused confusion or injury. I took the test on the spot, was handed a temporary belay pass for the day, and was then told to retest again the next day, which made little sense and added to the frustration. I hope management addresses this behavior, because it leaves a very sour impression and creates an unpleasant, unsafe environment for climbers.- Update: I Thank Movement for actively addressing this review. I appreciate the district director for reaching out.
They need to STOP raising the membership cost when they have no significant updates. This climbing gym is great if you are mainly looking to climb. If you are looking for a fitness gym it is severely lacking. They have very few machines, mainly only free weights. You would think there would at least be a lat pull down machine but nope not even one of those. If they continue to raise their membership prices without improving their gym it will be hard to stay a member there. Bottom line for climbing it is great which is the main focus of the gym.
Great first experience with my little girls. The space is clean, calming, and thoughtfully built-out. The staff were really friendly over the phone answering questions about my girls’ apprehensions. They were even more friendly in person. Em and a fellow female staff member working with her this morning were awesome! Em walked us up to the second floor, explained everything to us after answering all our questions, and then we proceeded to boulder. The girls loved it, and the next time I look forward to bringing my son to join in on the action. Lovely facilities with a laid back atmosphere. They offer plenty of areas to sit down and rest between climbs 🧗♂️, have a ping pong 🏓 table on the first floor, and a cute gift shop that has a few light snacks to power-up if you need a little pick me up. Fresh food and drinks would be a nice amenity or addition in the future for those looking to make a day of their experience without leaving the gym to eat. We can’t wait to come back!
SUCH A NICE GYM! I typically go to Movement gyms in Colorado but I stopped by here a couple of times on my trip to Chicago and I’ve got to say - it’s so nice! A very large 3-story facility with a good number of top rope and bouldering routes and challenges. They have lead climbing too but I didn’t try that out. The facility is new and has great new equipment. The ratings are a bit more vague (e.g. uses +/- instead of letters such as 5.10-). There’s a nice sign up white board where you can look for partners. The yoga studio is very clean and calming and has the equipment you would need to practice yoga. The gym on the top floor is very spacious with a lot of equipment. People are friendly and I feel like I wouldn’t have a problem finding some climbing partners and meeting new people if I were to stay in Chicago. I’ve got to say this seems nicer than the Baker gym in Colorado and I’m a little jealous.
