They still have the set up from the Halloween comp. It’s the middle of January. I think I’ll be ending my membership this month. It seems like there are two bouldering setters, and reliance on dynos past v5 grade has my elbows going. Portland rock gym here I come.
Love going to this gym when I'm visiting Portland friends. The staff is always welcoming. Dylan was so great helping me at the front desk. Thank you for the climbs, Movement!! Cheers
Bouldering grades used to be pretty consistent here (much more so than other local gyms such as PRG and the circuit) in the sense that you could expect for example two V3s to be of roughly comparable difficultly. However, now grades are all over the place and it's frustrating because it makes it harder to track progress over time. They are often off the actual difficulty by a full grade and on occasion by two full grades. Higher grades are slightly more accurate but consistency has declined there as well. At the same time, grades have also become a lot more sandbagged and this trend seems to be continuing. This would be fine if the grades were consistent relative to each other but they unfortunately aren't. I think the gym should consider letting members grade boulders like you do with routes. The upside is that setting is still pretty good. There isn't quite as much variety as there used to be when the gym had a larger setting team but to be fair that's probably unavoidable until the gym is able to hire more setters. I do miss the super technical slab problems that used to be common is this gym though.
Awesome gym. The ratings seem about two grades too high though. 5.10 seemed effortless, even being 54 and out of climbing shape. Oh well, I guess that’s the fun of sport climbing (versus outdoor trad). I love this place though. Definitely coming back.
Really well graded routes. No sandbagging maybe a few were graded one higher than they should be but that's to be expected in indoor gyms. Overall the gym is nice staff is really friendly. I only wish the movement would allow their gyms to have auto belay so those that are traveling don't need to find partners to climb.
